Book Mediation and Interpretive Roles: publishers and booksellers

Medeiros, N. (Speaker)

Activity: Talk or presentationInvited talk

Description

The purpose of this presentation is to dwell on the importance of two mediation agencies in the construction of the reader’s interpretations in the act of reading and/or discussing what was read with others. The two mediation agencies that interpose between the intended meaning of a text by its author and the actual interpretation made by the final reader with his or her subversive capacities are the publisher and the bookseller. The research pertains the decade of the forties in the 20th century Portugal. My main concern is to understand how these two agents participate in reading. I perceive reading as a collection of book appropriation and reception modalities, specially those connected to the interpretation and decoding its meaning.
