This paper presents an analysis of the container stowage problem of small containerships used in short-sea-shipping. Contrary to ocean-going containerships, smaller vessels are much more sensitive to stability and structural constraints, making the solution method selection much harder among the different available ones. A genetic algorithm implementation is proposed to solve this kind of problem. The results gathered using this method, on a very simple problem, are validated against known mathematical approaches.
