Abstract

This paper is an effort to offer some broad theoretical perspectives on approaches to death from a mainly anthropological point of view. It is not an exhaustive account but focuses on some broad themes that might lend themselves to a productive dialogue with contexts of transnationalism and migration. The latter may share with death certain transgressive and mediating characteristics, making their comparison and co-presence as phenomena extremely interesting. The presentation of these broader theoretical perspectives is backed by my own ethnographic research in Cuba, as well as data gathered and analysed by Clara Saraiva concerning the Pepel immigrants in Lisbon.
