Abstract

Real time monitoring of urban traffic is one key example application of participatory sensing principles. However, one issue still poorly scrutinized pertains to the degree of participation required to support such a service. This paper explores this issue. Specifically, we present our experimental findings concerning how key traffic sampling statistics evolve depending on the fraction of active participants in the monitored system. The results show that participation levels as little as 3% of participants can cover as much as 50% of the target area, rising to 80% with 10% participation.
