Abstract

On the 10th of November of 1675, Diogo Rodrigues Marques (alias Abraham Rodrigues Marques) signed his last will. This Jewish merchant from Torre de Moncorvo who lived his last years in London and made fortune in the Indian diamond trade, bequeathed £ 1.000 to the Sephardic congregation of London. According to Marques’ will, it should be extracted £ 50 from the annual interest income of this value and applied to endow a poor orphan girl from the Jewish community every year. The donation of this amount, extracted every year from the so-called “Marques Fund”, was still taking place in the 20th century. In this article, I present a translation of Diogo Rodrigues Marques’ testament. In addition, I transcribe an extract of the Ascamot (bye-laws) of the Spanish and Portuguese Jews’ Congregation of London published in 1754 concerning the regulation of the Marques fund.
